When an archer lifts their bow and arrow, they are singularly focused on their goal—to hit their target dead center. With the utmost precision, they pull back the arrow, creating energy and tension. They focus on the target, slowing their breath until the world around them becomes silent. In the blink of an eye, they release the arrow, doing their best to hit the bullseye. Their relentless pursuit of the target motivates them, each day presenting an opportunity to try again. The target never changes, only the skill and effort applied to reach it.
Like in archery, any successful business must have a singular target in order to thrive. Each member of the team must be fully participatory in the task of hitting that target and achieving the vision. At Bozzuto, our target is the realization that we can make the world a better place by creating sanctuary for those we serve. Each day, we understand the profound gift and nobility in purpose of this pursuit. Best of all, I know each of one us is committed to this vision.
I am so often reminded of President John F. Kennedy’s 1962 speech when he declared his vision to send a man to the moon. He said, “We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win …”
Sometime later, President Kennedy was touring NASA and saw a janitor mopping the floor. The president asked the janitor what he did at NASA, to which he replied “I’m helping put a man on the moon!” The janitor understood each member of NASA’s team played a critical role in their own unique way to helping achieve the agency’s goal. He knew he was using his energies and skills to help manifest the mission. Our collective vision for The Bozzuto Group is rooted firmly in the creation of goodness. We know the work we do directly impacts those we serve and creates joy in their lives. Furthermore, we know our collective actions are making the world a better place one person at a time.
Like JFK and the janitor at NASA, we realize we are “unwilling to postpone” our mission. The potential we have to impact the world is so incredible that anything other than urgency to do so would shortchange the opportunity we have in front of us. It is truly a gift to work with each and every one of you in this company.
