Demonstrating Our Resilience: An Introduction by Mark Weisner
Mark Weisner
Mark Weisner
President
Bozzuto Construction Company

Since the start of the pandemic, we have all been navigating uncharted waters—from learning how to do everything virtually to rising to the challenge of being essential workers and showing up to our offices and construction sites every day. And I must say, I have been inspired by the response and resilience of everyone at Bozzuto over these past few months.

I am especially impressed with our teams working on Bozzuto Construction job sites. Their rapid response to safeguard our workers and sites minimized exposure to the virus and kept our projects running safely. Thanks to their efforts, along with our in-house safety team, our Continuity Plan was successfully implemented and continues to evolve, allowing our company to excel in operations.

Despite the pandemic, our business has remained steadfast. Since March, we have reached substantial completion on several active projects, broken ground on four projects, been awarded three new opportunities, which will begin as early as next month, and we expect to execute another $200 million in new contracts by October 1.

We may be living in an environment of uncertainty, but based on the incredible work being done by all of our Bozzuto team members—as noted in this issue of the Buzz—I am confident that we will move forward together and come out stronger than before.

Extraordinary Is Almost Here: Anticipating the Chevy Chase Lake Gallery
A rendering of Chevy Chase Lake in Chevy Chase, Maryland

For the past two years, residents of Chevy Chase, Maryland have eagerly observed a bustling construction site enclosed in signage bearing the message, “Extraordinary is coming to Connecticut Avenue.” Extraordinary is indeed coming —and making excellent progress. Later this year, the community will be able to envision the upcoming Chevy Chase Lake development—which will ultimately feature a condominium building, two apartment buildings, a town square, direct metro access and plenty of retail options—by visiting the Chevy Chase Lake Gallery.

Located next to the construction site, the gallery will feature a to-scale model of the development, plus an immersive, virtual reality experience by Imerza to give visitors an unparalleled, authentic experience. In addition, visitors will also be able to walk through a decorated model home of a two-bedroom condominium unit. The gallery and model home will be fully decorated by the award-winning interior designers at the Akseizer Design Group (ADG) to help visitors imagine the possibilities of creating sanctuary in their new condominium or apartment home.

While delivery of the condos and the first apartment building is slated for summer/fall 2021 prospective residents can start to imagine the possibilities later this year. “There hasn’t been new condominium construction in Chevy Chase for quite a while,” BHI Vice President, Homebuilding Kerri Paulino explained. “We are anticipating interest from people in the Chevy Chase area who are looking to downsize without losing the convenience and comfort of their current lifestyle.”

The condominium hard hat tours will begin in spring 2021, at which time sales will officially commence. Stay tuned for updates on this elegant development!

BCC Continues to Build a Strong Company Amid COVID-19

As builders, the Bozzuto Construction Company (BCC) team plays a vital role in creating sanctuary. Despite the pandemic, BCC has started construction on four new developments since March and made progress on several others. These projects reaffirm that our partners trust us to deliver exceptional products, even during times of uncertainty. Take a look at what BCC is working on:

Construction began on four new projects:

  • BCC began renovating the Anna Cooper House, a 48-unit affordable housing community in Washington, D.C., owned by the nonprofit So Others Might Eat (SOME).
  • Southern Gateway became one of the first projects in the College Park, Maryland area to break ground during the pandemic.
  • The Lake Anne Fellowship House is a new senior housing community for Fellowship Square and Enterprise Community Development in Reston, Virginia.
  • Eleven Parkside is a Type 3A, six-story community in Washington, D.C. that has been designed to the LEED Gold Standard.

BCC completed three projects this spring:

  •  Ainger Place in Washington, D.C. reached substantial completion in March.
  • In April, the second building of the multiphase Faraday Park project in Reston, Virginia topped out.
  • BCC finished the 120-unit renovation of Jericho Residences in Landover, Maryland in May.

Finding Your Own Path at Bozzuto
BDC Development Manager Nick Umosella

For nearly five years, Bozzuto Development Company (BDC) Development Manager Nick Umosella has been an instrumental team member at Bozzuto. He started at Bozzuto Construction Company (BCC) as a project manager, where he worked on projects such as Channel Square and Liberty Harbor East. After about four years, he wanted to try something new and round out his skill set. Working with his BCC supervisor on a smooth transition process, Nick started working as a development manager for BDC, where he can apply his construction experience and master’s degree in real estate development, while also learning more about the development industry.

Nick is pleased by the career longevity at Bozzuto. “You can try multiple kinds of jobs without having to leave the company. That’s one of the best aspects of Bozzuto,” he reflected. “We’re like a Swiss Army Knife—we do it all.” If you’re thinking of moving around in the company, he recommends communicating your goals to your supervisors so that you can create a plan that you’re both comfortable with. After all, Bozzuto is a family taking care of families.

Welcome to #BozzutoAtHome

We’ve always believed in creating sanctuary—that hasn’t changed. However, over the past several months, the concept of sanctuary has taken on a new meaning for so many of us. Despite being physically apart from one another, many of us have been able to connect in new, innovative ways and recognized the importance of community, in the many forms it takes. We’ve reflected on what we need and what truly matters to us.

As a company, we’ve taken what we’ve learned over the past several months and applied it to #BozzutoStaysHome. Now called #BozzutoAtHome, this program will continue to bring exciting partnerships and helpful content to our Bozzuto community. During #BozzutoAtHome events, we will provide opportunities to learn, connect and thrive. Join us as we explore virtually what sanctuary can be—stay tuned for more information.
